The author of <Of Learned Ignorance>, Nicolas Cusanus remarked that as a circle becomes larger to the infinite, an arc in the circle gets lower curvature and becomes a straight line. This means that a curve and a straight line ultimately are the same. We recognize what’s not exactly a straight line, as a straight line. As Nietzsche said, “All truth is crooked,” a straight line may actually be part of a large circle. We become narrow-minded the moment we believe that the world we understand is everything.




<Of Learned Ignorance>의 저자Nicolas Cusanus는 원이 무한히 커지면, 원의 호는 곡률이 낮아지고 직선이 된다고 한다. 곡선과 직선이 결국 일치하게 된다는 뜻이다. 우리는 정확히 직선이 아닌 것들을 직선이라고 부르기도 한다. "모든 진리는 휘어져 있다"는 니체의 말처럼 직선이라고 여기는 것들이 사실은 큰 원의 일부일 수 있다. 우리가 알고 있는 사실, 우리가 이해하는 세상이 전부라고 생각하는 순간부터 편협해진다.



<Of Learned Ignorance> 的作者Nicolas Cusanus说,如将圆的直径无限延长,则圆会成为一条直线.就是说,曲线和直线的对立终将会相一致.我们通常会把按理说不是直线的东西叫成直线.正如尼采说过“所有真理都是扭曲的”一样,当初认为直线的东西,有可能只是大圆的一部分罢了.从自己了解到的真实,认为理解到的世界是所有的瞬间开始,就会变得狭窄盲目。
