When I was done, I thought again, 'What does this work mean?
The most common thought I had when I was creating a work while doing my task was, "What does this work mean?". I bought expensive materials and made a plausible piece of work. And the work was lost in its usefulness and dumped into a trash can. My task, which has become pretty trash, has wasted money and destroyed the environment. It may seem a bit cynical, but it was a actual message that the work threw at me. Under these circumstances, Corona 19 has worsened and disposable waste has increased. The idea here was upcycling. Plastic bags, which are difficult to throw away or reuse, have gradually sprung up around me, and I wanted to use them to make yarn and weave fabric. The yarn, made of plastic waste that gathers one by one, has a variety of textures and unique luster. I thought again about many things by weaving fabric without deciding the shape. When I was done, I thought again, 'What does this work mean?'
한창 과제를 하면서 작품을 창작해낼 때 가장 많이 드는 생각은 ‘이 작품이 무슨 의미가 있을까?’였다. 값비싼 재료을 구입해 그럴싸한 작품 하나를 만들었다. 그리고 그 작품은 그 유용가치를 다해 쓰레기통으로 버려졌다. 예쁜 쓰레기가 되어버린 내 과제로 인해 돈이 낭비되고 환경이 파괴되었다. 다소 냉소적으로 보여질 수 있지만 무쓸모해진 과제이자 작품이 나에게 던져주는 메시지 그대로였다. 이런 상황에서 코로나19는 더 악화되고 일회용 쓰레기는 늘어갔다. 여기서 든 생각은 업싸이클링이었다. 버리기도 재사용하기도 애매한 비닐봉지들이 내 주변에 점점 생겨났고 이를 이용해 실을 만들어 직물을 짜보고 싶은 생각이 들었다. 하나 둘씩 모여지는 비닐 쓰레기들로 만든 실은 다양한 질감과 독특한 광택을 내었다. 형태를 정하지 않고 직물을 짜며 여러가지 생각이 또 다시 들었다. 다 짠 후에 든 생각은 또 다시 ‘이 작품은 무슨 의미를 가질까?’였다.
