문자의 매력, 2021

Text is a way and tool through which humans deliver messages. I would like to take my favorite mountain view as an example. 《The Book of Mountains and Seas》is an important ancient book from the Warring States period in China, and is mainly filled with records geographic knowledge in folklore. You can enter the legendary world through text. Although it is a sentence composed of only a few characters, these simple and short sentences have been supplemented and extended over many generations, resulting in various mythical stories. Isn't this the charm of writing that shows an infinite world through limited tools?



문자는 인간이 메시지를 전달하는 방식이자 도구이다. 내가 가장 좋아하는 산해경을 예로 들고자 한다. 《산해경》은 중국의 춘추전국시대의 중요한 고서로 민간 풍문 속 지리 지식을 주로 기록하고 있다.
문자를 통해 전설 속 세계로 들어갈 수 있다. 고작 몇 자로 구성된 문장이지만, 바로 이 단순하고 짧은 문장들이 수많은 세대를 걸쳐 보충과 확장이 되고 이로 인해 다양한 신화적 이야기가 파생되었다. 한정된 도구를 통해 무한한 세계를 보여주는 문자의 매력이 바로 이런 것이 아닐까.


文字是人类传达信息的方式和工具。以我最喜欢的山海经为例，《山海经》是中国先秦时期的重要古籍，内容主要记录着当时民间传说中的地理知识。透过文字进入这个传奇的世界，寥寥几个字组成一个个简短的句子，正是这些看似简单短小的句子在历史长河中由各辈人们的补充扩写衍生出各种各样有趣的神话故事。通过有限的工具，展现无穷的世界，文字的魅力就在于此。
